A thief is rifling through wallets in cars so discreetly victims may not realize credit cards and ID’s have been pilfered until too late.

The last known targeted group: residents of a Canton subdivision who left wallets in their unlocked cars overnight Saturday, said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office.

The thief stole credit cards and driver’s licenses and left the wallets perhaps in hope the owners wouldn’t notice and cancel their credit cards, Baker said.

The thief bought expensive items such as digital cameras and digital hard drives at Walmart stores in Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Marietta with the credit cards. He then tried to return the items for cash at other Walmart stores, Baker said.

Three people have reported the thefts, Baker said.

The thief last tried to use the cards in Villa Rica and Alabama on Sunday, Baker said.

Store security cameras captured images of a man believed to be the suspect and the car he was driving, which is a red Chevrolet Camaro convertible with a black top and no tag. Anyone with any information is asked to call detectives at 770-928-0239, Baker said.
