Leaders in Cambridge, Massachusetts, voted Monday to approve a policy order asking the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate whether President Donald Trump should be impeached.
Proponents said Trump’s violation involves the emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prohibits the president from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments.
“We know that foreign governments go to Trump resorts. We know they go to Trump hotels. So it's clear Trump's portfolio is getting money from foreign governments,” Vice Mayor Marc McGovern said.
McGovern sponsored the policy order, but said it isn’t a partisan move.
“I don't think this is about party,” he said. “I think everybody should be concerned that our president might be in a position where he is compromised when he's dealing with foreign governments because he is in business with them.”
Democrat Hillary Clinton took nearly 90 percent of the vote in Cambridge in November’s presidential election. Only one Trump supporter attended Monday’s meeting to voice opposition.
“People who are against him and want to take him out they act like nobody's voting for him,” the supporter said.
While not many people in the city supported Trump during the election, some had issues with the City Council’s decision.
“I don't know, it doesn't seem like it's their responsibility. I think they need to be responsible for the city,” Tim Skalaban said.
