UPDATE: An 8-year-old girl has died from her injuries after falling two stories from a Carnival cruise ship Saturday morning, the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed.

Police told NBC Miami that the girl fell at 8:15 a.m. from a balcony inside the ship's atrium to the lower deck.

Carnival Cruise line released a statement on the incident:

"The ship's medical team responded immediately and the child was transported to the ship's medical center. She was subsequently transferred via ambulance to a local hospital. The ship's command immediately contacted Miami-Dade Police Department which is on site. Our most heartfelt care and concern is with the family at this very difficult time."

An 8-year-old girl fell approximately two stories from a Carnival cruise ship at the Port of Miami on Saturday morning, Miami Fire Rescue said.

The young girl was taken to a local trauma center and is reported to be in "extremely critical condition," according to the Miami Herald.

A Miami Fire Rescue captain told the Herald that they responded to the incident around 8 a.m. and rescue workers performed CPR on the girl.

It is still unclear how the girl fell and Miami-Dade police are investigating.
