For the AJC

John and Becky Beasley bought their traditional east Cobb home in 1997 when the neighborhood was young. They enjoyed watching new homes being built and seeing the neighborhood’s landscape develop. Today, they are surrounded by a much more lush landscape that includes a koi pond and a waterfall they added to their backyard.

Residents: Architect John and homemaker Becky Beasley

Location: East Cobb

Size: 5,600 square feet; 5 bedrooms, 4 ½ bath

Year Built: 1996

Year Bought: 1997

Architectural Style: Colonial revival

Renovations: The kitchen was remodeled in 2008 with new countertops, back splash and copper sinks. Several existing cabinets and the kitchen island were reworked to complement the new cabinetry. A new Sub-Zero refrigerator, Wolf gas stove and dishwasher finished out the renovation. The project cost about $70,000.

Favorite Architectural Feature: The screened in porch and deck overlooking the backyard is Becky's favorite place. The trompe l'oeil painting of a trellis on the wall and comfortable wicker furniture provide a peaceful place to enjoy a glass of iced tea, she says. The porch and deck were added about 10 years ago and cost about $24,000.

Interior Design Style: The traditional style was designed by Sharon Meyer Interiors. The guest bedrooms were decorated with their first grandchild in mind. Becky's Madame Alexander dolls, which she began collecting when her daughter was young, fill the shelves.

Favorite Design Feature: The Venetian plaster on the dining room ceiling and walls are beautiful in the afternoon light, Becky said.

Favorite Outdoor Feature: The koi fish pond with waterfall in the backyard, surrounded by big rocks that were trucked in.
