Dress professionally and be prepared
New employees should be professional, dressed appropriately for the position and prepared to listen and learn, according to E.J. Bacon, president and chief executive nurse at E.J. Bacon Nurse Careers Coach. "You should be ready to roll up your sleeves to do the job you have been hired to do...It's as important as the interview process."

Beware of the probation period
Just because you landed the job doesn't mean that assessments and evaluations are over, according to Bacon. To the contrary: managers will be checking to see if the new hire is a good fit on the first day and the ones that follow.

"Most companies have probation periods when they are still determining if a new employee is right for the job and their company," said Bacon. "New employees should strive to show that they are a valuable asset from the very first day."

Be punctual and positive

Melinda Ottinger, office manager for ServPro of North Fulton County, added that displaying a positive attitude from the get-go is crucial on your first day of work.

"Employers need someone with a positive attitude to keep productivity up and they need to see that starting the first day," she said. "Show up on time, be ready to learn and have that positive attitude your first day. That's all you need!"
