Greenville, S.C. -- Newt Gingrich, who knows a thing or two about winning the South Carolina Republican presidential primary, came to the aid of Ohio Gov. John Kasich here on Friday.

According to a report in Politico, Gingrich, who won the 2012 SC GOP contest, called on a pro-Jeb Bush super PAC to take down an ad critical of Kasich on national security.

From Politico:

...

But in a statement to POLITICO on Friday evening, Gingrich, who served with Kasich in the House of Representatives during the 1980s and 1990s, pushed back, saying that, "Any suggestion that John Kasich is anti-defense is simply false. I served with him for 16 years and he consistently fought for a better, more effective military."

Update: A Kasich super PAC has issued a statement directly from Gingrich:

"Any suggestion that John Kasich is anti-defense is simply false. I served with him for 16 years and he consistently fought for a better, more effective military. Any ad attacking Kasich on defense should be pulled as false and misleading."
