Donald Trump campaigned with Newt Gingrich for the first time this evening in Ohio, and while the billionaire did not disclose whether he'd pick the former Georgia lawmaker as a running mate he did promise some sort of role for him in a Trump administration.
The reaction from the crowd? "Newt! Newt!"
Check out this dispatch from the The Dayton Daily News, our sister paper:
Minutes later, he added, "If it's Newt, nobody's going to beat us in a debate, that's for sure."
Trump and Gingrich, a Republican whose positions on issues like free trade have recently adjusted to accommodate the presumptive nominee's more protectionist stance, found a similar target in Clinton, who earlier in the day ridiculed Trump's business deals.
"The only good thing she's done is get out of trouble when anybody else would be in jail," Trump bellowed to sustained applause at the Sharonville Convention Center.
Trump's visit to Cincinnati is his second to Ohio in as many weeks, after he stopped in eastern Ohio last week for a rally. Clinton has made four trips — including last week's campaign stop in Cincinnati with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. — since May.
Gingrich's introduction of Trump was short, clocking in at seven minutes. He spent much of his speech lambasting Hillary Clinton. He did post this amazing and awkwardly-angled Facebook Live video with Trump ahead of the event:
Trump's VP shortlist appeared to get two people shorter on Wednesday after Bob Corker and Joni Ernst indicated they'd rather stay where they are in the Senate. The billionaire today said there are about 10 names on his list, including two generals. He repeated, though, that he would like to pair up with someone who has experience moving legislation, indicating that Gingrich is likely still near the top.
Our Dayton brethren report that the possibility of a Trump-Gingrich ticket garnered some mixed reaction from the crowd.
