In the halls of Congress, there was a lot of buzz about how Osama Bin Laden could be hiding out in Pakistan without someone important in that country knowing about it.

"I find it very difficult to believe that they would not know," said Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK).

"They need to answer this question if we are going to go forward with a strong relationship with them," said Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).

"It's very hard for me to understand how the Pakistani ISI (Intelligence Service) would not have known there was something going on in that compound," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who is also the Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

As Feinstein told a small group of reporters just off the Senate floor last night, it's well known that Pakistan tries to play "both sides of the street" when it comes to issues related to Bin Laden and the Taliban.

That's why so many people in the halls of Congress find it hard to believe that the official Pakistani line was that they knew nothing about Bin Laden's hideout.

"We are looking right now at how he was able to hold out there for so long, and whether or not there was any type of support system within Pakistan that allowed him to stay there," said White House Counterterrorism Adviser John Brennan.

Brennan said the Pakistani government denied helping Bin Laden. Whether that's true or not, officials say someone had to be helping him.

"I think it’s inconceivable that bin Laden did not have a support system in the country that allowed him to remain there for an extended period of time," Brennan told a White House briefing.

"We are closely talking to the Pakistanis right now, and again, we are leaving open opportunities to continue to pursue whatever leads might be out there," he added.

It is a touchy subject already in the halls of Congress, as some lawmakers call for aid to be cut back to the Pakistani regime.

Ironically, there is a hearing today in the House Homeland Security Committee on U.S. anti-terror efforts and threats coming from Pakistan.

This latest discovery makes that situation with Bin Laden all the more interesting.
