Stephenson junior Ga'Von Wray gave up a couple of hits in his last start Friday in a 15-0 victory over Jonesboro. That’s news because it had been weeks since somebody reached safely against the Jaguars’ right-hander.

Wray had pitched three straight no-hitters.

‘’I was trying to find out if that was some kind of record,’’ Stephenson coach Marco Jackson said. “I’ve never heard of anyone throwing three no-hitters in a row.’’

Georgia doesn’t keep individual baseball records, but it was a pretty neat streak regardless.

It began on March 13 when Wray had nine strikeouts in a seven-inning 5-0 victory over Drew. On March 21, he had 12 strikeouts in six innings in a 10-0 victory over M.L. King. Then on March 26, he had seven strikeouts in a four-inning 15-0 win over Lovejoy. Wray was part of a fourth no-hitter against Lithonia but had relief help in that one.

For the season, Wray is 6-1 with 56 strikeouts in 34.2 innings.

‘’Wray’s that kid that kid that comes along every now and then where he’s special,’’ Jackson said. “He has great character, says, ‘yes sir, no sir,’ just a good kid with good grades. He’s that package that’s hard to find these days.’’

Wray also is a quarterback on the football team. He started several games last season and will contend for the starting job again this fall. He’s on trips to visit two colleges in Florida this week and will have discussions about both sports. He’s visited Tennessee three times. Mercer called last week.

‘’Once he hits the [showcase] circuit, he’s going to have choices,’’ Jackson said.

Wray is not an overpowering pitcher. He throws in the high-80s, low-90s, and commands three pitches well.

“He’s not the hardest-throwing kid, but he’s confident,’’ Jackson said. ‘’He doesn’t mind throwing a curve ball or changeup on a full count.’’

Jackson’s next start is Friday against Newton.
