The Fulton County School District says it found no evidence one of its baseball coaches used a racial slur toward a member of the Valdosta High School baseball team.
In a statement released today, Fulton Schools said:
The Fulton County School District has concluded its investigation into an allegation from a Facebook post on February 18, 2018, by a Valdosta High School parent against an Alpharetta High School baseball coach. Although the allegation was made via Facebook and no formal complaint was filed by the parent or the Valdosta City School District, FCS took the allegation seriously and completed a full investigation. This included speaking with potential witnesses both with the Alpharetta Baseball team and with the Valdosta Baseball team, as well as the umpire of the game and the Valdosta City School District administration.
Upon completion of this investigation, the allegation was not substantiated.
When the allegation was made, it was met by disbelief by Alpharetta baseball players who took to social media to defend their coach.
At the time, Valdosta City Schools Superintendent Todd Cason told me, “My athletic director and head coach have secured statements from those who may have heard the exchange. Upon receiving, I will contact the school, superintendent, Georgia High School Association, and Professional Standards Commission. With that being said, if this occurred as described, and we don’t have reason not to believe our player, there is absolutely no place in our society for it, especially when it involves children.”
In late February Cason told me, “We are almost done with the investigation.”
However, he has not responded to recent requests for an update on what his own review discovered.
