Did you know that the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) offers Cider Style Guidelines as part of its judge training and sanctioned competitions?

Last month, UrbanTree Cidery, Atlanta’s first craft cider maker, was named a 2020 Good Food Awards finalist for its Habanero Haze cider.

Since its release in 2016, it has received many other awards and accolades, including a Gold and Best in Class medal at the 2019 GLINTCAP Awards, and a Double Gold medal at the 2019 Seattle Cider Awards.

To mark those milestones, Habanero Haze, is this week’s “Beer Pick.”

Habanero Haze

UrbanTree Cidery, Atlanta

Available in 750 mL swing top bottles

Profile

Habanero Haze is a hard cider that’s infused with fresh ginger and habanero peppers to create what Urban Tree Cidery describes as “a well-rounded, complex beverage with a spicy kick.”

I detected more heat in the nose than on the palate. But it is slightly hazy. And the ginger and pepper play well together to create a distinctly spicy character, with aromas and flavors of ripe apples, before a pleasing sweet-tart finish.

Pair with

Try Habanero Haze with fresh cheeses, quesadillas, or with desserts like apple crisp or deep dish apple pie.
