Sleeping 10-year-old DeKalb girl shot in the arm

DeKalb police said the shots came during a shootout outside. They collected shell casings from two different guns.

A 10-year-old Scottdale girl was shot in the arm as she slept in her bed Wednesday night, according to DeKalb County police.

The child was hurt when a stray bullet tore through her second-floor bedroom wall just after 10 p.m., police said. Neighbors at the Oak Forest Apartments in the 300 block of Hatton Drive told Channel 2 Action News they heard about a dozen gunshots coming from the parking lot.

Police believe there were two gunmen involved in a shootout, the news station reported. Shell casings from two different guns were recovered.

“She could have been gone, but God is good,” Vicki Randall, a family friend, told Channel 2. “So I’m asking everyone to go in prayer for her, and let’s keep the violence out of this community.”

The girl was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Police are investigating if surveillance cameras on the property captured any images of the suspects.

An updated condition for the girl was not given Thursday, but Randall told Channel 2: “So far, she is good.”

“She is still going through a devastation about what happened to her, but we are going to hope and pray she is going to be OK.”
