Missing UGA student found dead in wrecked truck

Police: Man found dead in car is missing UGA student

A University of Georgia student reported missing over the weekend was found dead inside his wrecked truck Monday night.

Quinton Ayers’s truck was found wrecked off Ga. 316 near Harbins Road, Gwinnett County police Cpl. Jake Smith said. He said the vehicle was well off the roadway, and may have been there for several days.

The wreckage was spotted by a passing tractor-trailer driver “who could just make out the truck’s undercarriage from his elevated position,” Smith said.

He said the truck had apparently “hit a tree at significant speed.”

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office had posted an advisory on its web page earlier on Monday about the 22-year-old’s disappearance.

According to the advisory, Ayers was last seen in Athens around 1 a.m. on Friday.

“We have information that he may have left Athens enroute to Adairsville, but he never arrived there,” the advisory continued. “His last known cell phone activity was traced to a location in Gwinnett County near the airport.”

According to his public Facebook page, Ayers was a 2008 graduate of Adairsville High School and was attending UGA.
