A Georgia man with a criminal record was killed Tuesday night in a shootout with police in Panama City Beach, Fla., officials said.

Shawn Anthony Dumitras, 43, of Villa Rica, led officers on a foot chase before he was shot, according to wjhg.com.

The incident began about 11 p.m. when officers responded to a 911 call at an apartment complex. The caller said a man was slumped over the steering wheel of a car that had been in the parking lot for hours, the station reported.

Dumitras “got hostile” with officers, shots were fired, and Dumitras left, officers said.

Dumitras fired more shots in a nearby neighborhood and threatened a homeowner in an attempt to get in, police said. Homeowners helped track down Dumitras, and he was killed in another shootout.

Dumitras had drug trafficking and gun offenses, police said. He also had an active warrant from the U.S. Marshals for drug trafficking.
