A father was arrested after he fled a traffic stop, leaving authorities to find his 10-month-old daughter dead in the back seat of the car.
Cameron Ramon Reese, 22, faces charges of aggravated assault and concealing the death of another after he ran from police during a traffic stop early Wednesday in Greenville, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
Reese was keeping the child at his Greenville apartment when he contacted the mother, Nikia Reeves, about the baby not breathing, GBI agent Fredrick Wimberly told AJC.com.
Authorities said Reeves, 19, met Reese at the Greenville Commons in the 700 block of North Depot Street to check on the child.
Wimberly said the two got into a car and began driving when, at some point, Reeves realized the child was dead.
“During the encounter, (Reese) pulls out a steak knife and Reeves jumps out of the vehicle, sustaining severe road rash,” Miles said in a statement.
Reese then got into the driver’s seat, turned the car around and began speeding in the opposite direction, Wimberly said. He was stopped by Greenville police for speeding, according to the GBI, but fled the scene and left the baby inside the car.
Police dogs eventually tracked him back to the apartment complex, where he was arrested, officials said.
The GBI will perform an autopsy.
