About Emily Newsom

Age: 35

Current town: Atlanta

Military service: 2006-11 in Army in Iraq

Job: Paralegal

Education: Master of Social Work

Most memorable time in service: Being deployed. “I worked hard for my promotion and I was promoted in Iraq. It was in Iraq where I really learned what I was capable of because there was no other option. My first deployment was 15 months and I am so thankful for amazing leadership and teammates because I have to acknowledge them for the confidence they gave me. I was home only eight months before I deployed again. I received my orders the week I boarded a plane to Iraq for 12 months, not knowing anyone. Looking back, that experience made me realize I was stronger than I originally thought. The Army was an amazing experience for me and I have regret for getting out.”
