American Cancer Society eliminates 140 jobs nationwide

The American Cancer Society has eliminated 140 positions nationwide, including 80 or so in Atlanta. The cuts occurred last week in its national home office, which is based in Atlanta.
The sour economy has taken its toll on the organization, as it has on other non-profits that have seen financial donations decrease. Contributions are expected to be off by more than 10 percent during the 2009 fiscal year ended Aug. 31, compared to the same period a year ago, according to ACS spokesman Greg Donaldson.
In most cases, Donaldson said the cuts involved employees, but some covered vacant positions. More than 1,000 people work in the national operation, many of whom are in Atlanta.
The regional division, which is located in the same building on Williams Street, was not affected by the cuts. Donaldson said none of the organization's programs or services will be cut.
"The economy and the impact on the American Cancer Society presents an unwelcome opportunity to heighten operating efficiency and improve the focus of our mission," Donaldson said. "Frankly, we believe our donors would expect nothing less of us."
