Billionaire environmentalist says world has too many people
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Failure to address global warming will have us all dead or eating each other by mid-century.
So says Ted Turner, the restaurateur, environmentalist and former media mogul whose controversial comments have earned him the nickname "Mouth of the South."

If steps aren't taken to stem global warming, "We'll be eight degrees hotter in 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow," Turner said during a wide-ranging, hour-long interview with PBS's Charlie Rose that aired Tuesday.
"Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals," said Turner, 69. "Civilization will have broken down. The few people left will be living in a failed state — like Somalia or Sudan — and living conditions will be intolerable."
One way to combat global warming, Turner said, is to stabilize the population.
"We're too many people; that's why we have global warming," he said. "Too many people are using too much stuff."
Turner suggested that "on a voluntary basis, everybody in the world's got to pledge to themselves that one or two children is it."
Admitting that he's "always suffered from foot-in-the-mouth disease," Turner added, "I've gotten a lot better, though. It's been a long time since anybody caught me saying something stupid."
Turner went on to say that military budgets need to be cut "way back."
"Right now, the U.S. is spending $500 billion a year on the military, which is more than all 190 countries in the world put together," he said.
"The two countries that the military industrial complex and some of our politicians would like to demonize and make enemies are Russia and China," Turner said. "China just wants to sell us shoes. They're not building landing craft to attack the United States, and Russia wants to be our friends, too."
He said that despite the United States' huge military budget, "we can't win in Iraq."
"We're being beaten by insurgents who don't even have any tanks, they don't have a headquarters, they don't have a Pentagon, we don't even know if they have any generals," Turner told Rose.
Turner called the Iraqi insurgents "patriots" who "don't like us because we invaded their country and occupied it. Nobody likes to be invaded."
The CNN founder also said he thinks his old network has veered too far away from serious news, instead favoring lighter stories delivered by attractive female "chickies" and opinion-based news such as Lou Dobbs' show.

Global warming is a very complex subject, so we never can make any assumptions. Some things may increase extremely, or some things may decrease extremely, you'll never know. But we must try to stop global warming before it kills us all first! Believe me it will happen, because of AMERICANS and their litter, we will keep global warming going and it will never begin to decrease. We will all soon die and be led to cannibalism, because our soil will be no good any more so we won't be able to grow our food, and we wont eat, so we will be led to eat each other. So please listen to this man, he obviously knows what he's talking about!!

I don't think we are overpopulated. Someone once said that all the people in the world could all fit in the U.S. with at least everyone having 2 acres of land. However, the things is that we overusing our resources and hoarding them so much. We create so much waste, when our ancestors use to be very resourceful and recycled most of their stuff. They didn't create things like plastic or other items which are virtually non-degradable.
IN fact, most of the problems of overheating are caused by deforestation. If we weren't so proactive on destroying the rain-forest and such, then we wouldn't be in the situation we are now. So don't blame it on the worlds poor who are not even the ones advocating deforestation, blame it on the rich. If anyone has to go, it should be these multinational corporations and elitist who need to buy land the size of utah just to make a meaningful profit just because they create so much waste.

UNFORTUNATETLY the majority of humans are ignorant, self-absorbed, or out in lala land. THE Rich and Powerful ie Corporate World wont stand for anything that cuts into their profits. The best thing that could happen would be for humans to wipe out their own race and leave the rest of the world to go on with out us.

Hello Ted,
I started out with the observation that truth (about the future) does not matter. Scientists have been giving us vital imformation for decades now, and the general population and politicians are unable to connect.
I'm only a year younger than you. I foresee a vital need for a new TV channel that originates from the point of view of Earth, not man. Earth reports about changes that are occurring to her, rather like a patient reporting observations about his terminal condition.
Imagine, weather reports that were relevant to the planet, rather than the irrelevant information we receive now.
If there was a station devoted to Earth the way CNN was devoted to news many years ago, people might have more concrete information for understanding our state on this fragile planet.
Thanks,
Hayden Knox

Ted - I'm sorry you have to put up with ignorant people in this comment section, who have no conception of the laws of physics as opposed to the laws of dogma. You are 100% right about the impact of overpopulation on the limited environment resources of our planet, and the impact it may well have on human institutions in the new century. This is the most basic cause of all of our environmental problems, and it will have an even bigger impact as developing nations aspire to the worldly goods we enjoy in the US and Europe.
I admire you for your guts to say what you really feel, and hope you live long enough to tell your detractors how wrong they were. But then again, I hope instead that enough people wise up and start to institute the changes needed to forestall the oncoming storm you predict.
As a fellow sailor, I know the wisdom of reefing sails before the storm hits.

Anyone who has done their homework will have learned that statistically man contributes approximately 8-10% to the cause of greenhouse gases and that the rest is caused by rotting vegetation and animals. The actual cause of global warming is an unexplained rise in solar activity, which has solar scientists perplexed, as this is usually a period when the sun is more complacent. The greenie global warming campaign is one that has been spurred on by paranoia as well as scientific and political gain (i.e. Al Gore).

Talk about a leap of bad faith-This is it!
What scientific basis ever existed, beyond pulling the grants from scientests who oppose this junk science theory. Bogus at best. Dangerous to our economy at worst.
If implemented, we will give the world tet another trade advantage when it becomesclear, no one but us will go along with the regs!

Ted Turner knows what every sailor knows: if you think its time to change sails, then its time to change sails. Hesitating can be deadly. He applies this same logic to global warming. I think we should listen to him.

If we all became vegan, or even vegetarian, we would save enough resources and reduce global warming more than if we gave up driving our SUV's! That's right: eating meat is worse for the environment than driving an SUV. The number one cause of rainforest deforestation and water pollution is the beef industry. Also, eating more RAW foods is important. When you cook food, you're killing around 80% of its nutrients, forcing you to consume more. Check out raw, organic, vegan websites, you'll feel better, the animals will too, and the planet will thank you.
