Three Atlanta United players received enough votes to become finalists for four of MLS’ end-of-season awards.
Thiago Almada, who scored 11 goals with a league-leading 19 assists, is a finalist for MVP and Young Player of the Year, Giorgos Giakoumakis, who scored 17 goals, for Newcomer of the Year, and Miles Robinson, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon last season, for Comeback Player of the year, according to information provided by the league Thursday.
The other two finalists for MVP are Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta, who finished with 17 goals and 14 assists while leading his team to the Supporters’ Shield, and LAFC’s Denis Bouanga, who won the Golden Boot with 20 goals.
The other two finalists for Newcomer are Miami’s Lionel Messi and St. Louis’ Eduard Lowen.
The other two finalists for Young Player, given to someone 22 years or younger during the year, are Orlando’s Duncan McGuire and Columbus’ Aiden Morris.
The other two finalists for Comeback Player are Seattle’s Joao Paulo and Sporting KC’s Alan Pulido.
The voting body was composed of current MLS players, coaches and technical directors and select journalists. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution doesn’t participate in voting.
Atlanta United, St. Louis and Cincinnati lead the league with four finalists each.
