Lionel Messi didn’t travel with Miami for Saturday’s MLS match against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

ESPN first reported Friday night that Messi didn’t travel with the team for the match, which will kick off at 5:09 p.m. The Miami Herald reported Saturday morning that Messi is missing the match because of fatigue.

Atlanta United is expecting a large crowd, with more than 70,000 tickets sold and distributed, with many people wanting to see the World Cup winner.

The largest crowd, 73,019, in Mercedes-Benz Stadium history was set when Atlanta United hosted Portland in the MLS Cup in 2018. It remains the third-largest crowd in MLS history.

Messi hasn’t played since Sept. 7, when he scored the winning goal in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Buenos Aires.

Inter Miami, which is six points below the playoff line with eight matches remaining, will host Orlando on Wednesday.
