Some metro Atlanta schools canceling classes Monday as storm approaches

Others have postponed or rescheduled activities Saturday and Sunday.

Several metro Atlanta schools, colleges and universities are closing and canceling activities this weekend in preparation for the massive storm predicted to hit North Georgia. Some are also canceling in-person classes Monday.

Fulton County and City Schools of Decatur announced Friday afternoon they will hold classes remotely on Monday. DeKalb County is canceling classes Monday.

Many school systems in the northeastern Appalachian foothills of the state will be closed Monday or have announced at-home learning days — including Union, Habersham, Towns, Rabun, Fannin and Gilmer counties.

Clayton County’s school system said Friday afternoon it is “strongly looking at a school closure for Monday.”

Other school districts have said they would share their plans about Monday classes by Sunday afternoon or evening.

The list of public school districts canceling or rescheduling all activities Saturday and Sunday includes Atlanta, Cherokee, Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Marietta, Paulding, Rockdale and City Schools of Decatur.

In Marietta, school district workers put chains on the tires of their vehicles to help with traction in case they drive over any ice patches after the storm. They also put ice melt on sidewalks on school campuses.

Atlanta’s school system is encouraging families who need food assistance to visit the APS Food Assistance page or text “FINDFOOD” in English or “COMIDA” in Spanish to 888‑976‑2232 for more information and to locate nearby food pantries.

Several colleges and universities, including the University of Georgia, encouraged students to return home for the weekend after their classes concluded on Friday, if possible. UGA’s residence halls will remain open for students who choose to stay.

The university also canceled classes and events for Monday.

“(B)ut if there are power outages, water line breaks or other complications from the storm, University Housing may need to consolidate those who remain on campus into a limited number of temporary housing areas with emergency heat and meal services,” the university said in a message to the campus community.

Dining halls will maintain normal operating hours and the university’s transit system will continue to provide regular service as possible under the weather conditions.

Georgia Tech, which has the largest enrollment of any school in the state, is encouraging students, faculty and employees to check for updates on its Emergency Notification System.

Emory University’s campuses, including Oxford College, will be closed this weekend. University employees should plan on working remotely. Essential personnel should contact their supervisors for guidance. Emory Healthcare employees should refer to communications from EHC for information.

Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities are closing their campuses Saturday and Sunday, which includes the cancellation of all activities and sports events. Students, faculty and staff have been told to monitor their institution’s website for updates about Monday’s schedule.

The University of North Georgia will be closed this weekend and is encouraging students to return home if possible. There will be some dining services Saturday and Sunday.

Young Harris College canceled classes Friday afternoon and encouraged students to head home ahead of this weekend’s winter weather. Monday classes are also canceled.

Mercer University said the weather could impact class schedules and operations on its Atlanta campus Monday. If changes to Monday’s schedule are warranted, notification to students, faculty and staff at affected locations will be sent no later than 5 p.m. Sunday.

Piedmont University is suspending on campus learning Friday and Monday for the Athens and Demorest campuses. Online classes will also be suspended. The Athens and Demorest campuses will be for faculty and staff until 2 p.m. Friday. Campus operations on those campuses will be suspended Monday.

“We urge all students who are able to go home to do so,” the university said on its website.
