Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said scattered showers are expected Saturday afternoon.

North Georgia has already surpassed 60 days of 90-degree heat this year, but this weekend will usher in a cooler trend.

Of course, that cool-down will be predicated by a pretty soggy Saturday.

A cold front will move into North Georgia on Saturday morning, bringing a 70% chance of rain with it, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said. The rain will mostly arrive after noon, but a few morning showers are possible.

“Starting at 3 p.m., we’ll see some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms, which will continue throughout the afternoon,” he said.

Some areas, namely Dawson and Pickens counties, saw more than 2 inches of rainfall Friday afternoon when slow-moving storms moved in. Burns said Saturday’s storms will be similar.

“These are going to be very slow movers as well, moving 10 mph or less,” Burns said. “These will be capable of producing locally heavy rain in short order.”

Slick roads won’t be the only thing likely to affect traffic during the weekend. The three-day Corky Kell Classic, which had its games at Coolray Field canceled Friday night due to rain, continues Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Games begin at 9 a.m., and the final one starts at 8:45 p.m., so downtown surface streets will likely be affected all day by high school football fans.

The rain will cool Atlanta down a little bit, with the city expected to miss the 90s by a degree, but the real temperature shift will happen Sunday, Burns said.

“On Sunday, we have a wedge of cool air developing,” he said. “This is going to be a great deal. It’s going to feel very much like fall after the mid-90s that we’ve seen.”

Sunday should peak at 81 degrees, and most of the day should be spent in the upper 70s, Burns said. Monday should be just as cool before temperatures begin to slowly climb as the week progresses.
