Hank Aaron homer anniversary: AJC keepsakes, special coverage today
On April 8, 1974, in Atlanta, Hank Aaron smashed baseball’s home run record, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is joining Atlanta in marking the 50th anniversary of the historic sports moment.
In Sunday’s print edition, we featured personal stories from Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron’s teammates and an essay by Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Bill Rankin, who attended the game with his father the night Aaron made history. The Opinion section republished a column by legendary AJC sportswriter Furman Bisher, and our editorial cartoonist, Mike Luckovich weighed in, too.
We’re marking the anniversary online Monday with all those reflections and more in our special digital presentation. We’ll have digital extras that include our video interview with Aaron about the historic moment.
In the printed newspaper, you’ll find three collectibles — a special poster that wraps around our front page and a keepsake illustration that documents each of Aaron’s 715 home runs. We’re also sharing The Atlanta Constitution’s front page documenting Aaron’s feat. (The page has been modified slightly to work with our current format.)

The Braves commemorate the historic home run with a Hank Aaron bobblehead giveaway at Monday’s game. We’ll tell you everything you need to know, and we’ll have coverage from the game online that evening.
AJC columnist Michael Cunningham will cover Monday’s unofficial opening of Atlanta History Center’s new exhibit, “More Than Brave.” It officially opens Tuesday and runs through September 2025.
Readers who don’t receive the AJC by home delivery can purchase the edition at metro Atlanta retail stores that sell the daily newspaper.
Want to purchase your own copy of the keepsakes that appear in Monday’s printed newspaper? Our two posters and our front page from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will be available at ajc.com/bravesnews.
You can also buy our 128-page book, “Hank Aaron: A Tribute to the Hammer,” by calling 1-800-888-4741 or by visiting triumphbooks.com/hankaaron.
