Atlanta United striker Giorgos Giakoumakis will miss Saturday’s match at NYCFC after he was diagnosed with a bone bruise on his right knee, manager Gonzalo Pineda said Thursday.
An MRI examination revealed Giakoumakis’ knee is structurally sound. Giakoumakis leads Atlanta United with five goals. He sustained the injury Sunday during the first half of a 3-0 victory against Chicago.
Atlanta United’s Xande Silva also will miss the match after sustaining an adductor injury in training Wednesday that Pineda described as minor.
With Giakoumakis out, the team could turn either to Jamal Thiare, who scored two goals against Chicago, or Daniel Rios.
Silva could be replaced by Tyler Wolff, who started at left two weeks ago at Toronto, or Edwin Mosquera. Pineda declined to say who will start in place of Silva, who has two assists this season.
Pineda said that centerback Stian Gregersen’s recovery from meniscus surgery is going well. He was expected to miss at least three weeks. The surgery was performed around March 24.
