Above-average temperatures and summertime showers are both in the forecast once again on the first day of September, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The morning is off to a warm start with temperatures in the mid-70s. Most areas are dry, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

As the afternoon progresses, temps will tick up toward a high of 89 degrees. While Atlanta won’t make it into the 90s, the high is still above the average of 86 degrees, Nitz said.

The afternoon hours are also expected to bring some pop-up showers and storms. Nitz anticipates the wet weather will move in about 2 p.m.

“We will start to pick up some isolated storms,” Nitz said. “(They will) continue into the evening.”

Dry air will move into the area overnight, giving us a break from the wet weather Wednesday and Thursday. Both days will be much hotter, with temperatures in the low 90s in the forecast.

Most of metro Atlanta’s interstates are free and clear Tuesday, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. There are just a few trouble spots.

Drivers should expect heavy delays on I-85 northbound at Clairmont Road in Dekalb County. A crash in the area closed all lanes of the interstate about 4:30 a.m., the Traffic Center reported. While authorities have reopened all but one lane, backups are still causing a sluggish commute.
