Clouds are expected to thicken up Thursday ahead of scattered showers and thunderstorms arriving Friday afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.

There should still be enough sunshine Thursday to warm up. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said after another cold start in the 20s and 30s, Atlanta is headed for a high of 56 degrees this afternoon. That is about average for this time of year, he said.

No raindrops are in the forecast Thursday, but Monahan is predicting an 80% chance of rain for what will be a wet Friday.

“We’ll have some heavier downpours to finish the week, but by the start of the weekend, we’re right back to that drier weather,” he said. “I think by the time you wake up Saturday morning, the sun is starting to come out.”

While the best chance of rain is Friday afternoon, Monahan said a warm front lifting across North Georgia early Friday morning could trigger a few isolated showers. Things will really get going once an area of low pressure and a cold front come through later in the day, he said.

“That’s going to give us scattered showers, a few rumbles of thunder, and that’s going to go toward Friday evening before that rain is going to start to taper off,” Monahan said.

Some of the rain could be heavy in a few neighborhoods. Thunderstorms are most likely on the Southside, according to Channel 2.

With all the extra clouds and showers around, Monahan said Friday should also be much warmer. Temperatures are expected to start in the mid-40s and finish in the upper 50s.

Saturday will be cooler with a projected high of 52 degrees, but it will also be drier, according to Channel 2.

“It will be mostly sunny for you most of the weekend across North Georgia,” Monahan said.

There may not be any weather-related traffic delays Thursday, but crashes have clogged metro Atlanta interstates all morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The latest crash blocks a right lane on I-20 East at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the Traffic Center reported. Commuters should expect delays getting into downtown.

There are also slight delays on the I-285 outer loop after authorities put out a vehicle fire at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County. The fire was cleared by 9:20 a.m., but delays remain out of Doraville, according to the Traffic Center.
