National Guard present downtown but remain on standby

Jan 27, 2023

Georgia National Guard troops have begun to assemble in downtown Atlanta, but Gov. Brian Kemp’s office said they remain on standby in case peaceful protests turn violent.

Kemp can choose to deploy as many as 1,000 National Guard troops because he signed an emergency order Thursday.

Fox5 photojournalist Billy Heath posted video to Twitter showing dozens of National Guard troops setting up equipment and moving armored vehicles into place in parks near the state Capitol.
