Cobb residents seeking relief from the heat will soon have more places to cool off.

Starting Monday, Cobb County Parks and Recreation will open four aquatic centers, as well as some outdoor playgrounds and restroom facilities.

These facilities “will have public health restrictions in place that will help maintain recommended social distancing,” according to the county’s news release.

Aquatic centers opening June 1 are:

•Central Aquatic Center: 15 swimmers (one per lane)

•Mountain View Aquatic Center: 25 swimmers (one per lane)

•West Cobb Aquatic Center: 10 Swimmers (one per lane and two in the deep water)

•South Cobb Aquatic Center: five swimmers (one per lane and one in the center’s lazy river for exercising)

The number of people using the aquatic centers will be limited, and swim lessons will not be allowed at this time. Users can also rent lanes if they would prefer to secure a time to swim. You can reserve your spot by visiting the county's website.

Opening on June 15 will be the Seven Springs Water Park and the Sewell Park pool. The parks department will limit the water park to 25% capacity, or 125 swimmers per session. The Sewell Park pool will accommodate up to 20 swimmers at a time. That park’s splash pad will remain closed.

Cobb's aquatic facilities are all indoors and typically open year-round, county spokesman Ross Cavitt previously said, but were closed in March to limit the spread of COVID-19. Outdoor swim areas, like most parks, were also closed.

The parks department is working with athletic organizations to come up with a plan that will allow organized games to resume at these facilities. Those plans could be approved as early as mid-June, Cobb said.

Cobb County is still not accepting park rental requests, but staff hope to resume that activity soon. The county said it will update its Parks and Recreation website and social media accounts with any changes to hours of operation or what activities are available.
