Some Gwinnett County teachers got a lesson Tuesday in what it’s like to work in a hospital operating room. A few had an opportunity to work on their acting skills. Others spent part of the day at Google.

These 40 teachers weren’t playing hooky. They were shadowing people in other professions, an annual affair put together by Georgia’s largest school district that it hopes will help teachers in the classroom.

“By engaging in these activities, the teachers will learn how classroom content and learning strategies are applied in the workplace,” said Jody Reeves, executive director of Gwinnett’s Academies and Career & Technical Education.

State leaders have raised concerns in recent years that students are graduating without many of the skills employers need for their businesses. Gwinnett paired up teachers Tuesday with Gwinnett Medical Center, acclaimed director Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company, Georgia Power, Cox Communications and other companies.
