Gwinnett County school board members Thursday evening denied an application for a Korean-English dual language charter school.

The school board gave the applicants the options to revise its plans and try again.

School district officials said the proposed Yi Hwang Academy of Philosophy, Art and Science needed more work. Concerns with the application included:

  • it needed more clarity about how they would measure student learning.
  • it hadn't identified a location for the facility.
  • there was no budget for planning and start-up costs.

“We find that there are significant concerns with the petition,” said Gwinnett school district administrator Steve Flynt.

The proposed school would serve kindergarten through fifth-graders with a focus in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.
