Several Georgia colleges and universities are closed or closing early Friday as a winter storm moves through the area.

All campuses of the University of North Georgia are closed today. Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and Kennesaw State universities will close campuses at noon. Mercer University’s Atlanta campus and its Henry County and Douglas County Regional Academic Centers will also close at noon today.

Georgia Gwinnett College will also close at noon. Emory, the University of West Georgia and the schools in the Atlanta University Consortium, including Morehouse, Spelman and Clark Atlanta University will close at 2 p.m. The University of Georgia in Athens will close campus at 2:30 p.m.

Several schools have also cancelled Saturday classes and activities.

Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in 21 counties on Thursday ahead of the system that may dump as much as 2 inches of snow in metro Atlanta and more than a foot in higher elevations in North Georgia. A winter weather advisory for accumulating snow and ice will be in effect from 3 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday for metro Atlanta, and a winter storm warning for far north Georgia through 7 p.m. Saturday, according to Channel 2 meteorologists.
