At a special called meeting on March 28, the Gwinnett County Board of Education named Karen Lillard as the principal of Brookwood Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year. Lillard, who serves as principal of Beaver Ridge Elementary School, will take over the post currently held by Cheri Carter who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Lillard served as assistant principal at Beaver Ridge for five years prior to being named principal. She came to Gwinnett County Public Schools in 1999 after teaching in Alabama. She previously taught kindergarten through sixth grade as a classroom teacher and support teacher.

A graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama in 1997 with an early childhood and elementary degree, Lillard also received her middle school certification with a specialization in literacy and social studies. She has her masters degree in elementary reading and literacy.

Lillard is also a member of the 2014 cohort and graduate of the Quality-Plus Leader Academy, Aspiring Principal Program.
