A home burglary suspect who shot at Sandy Springs officers and was in a three-hour standoff with them is a 15-year-old boy, police said Friday.

The teen faces a host of charges, including six counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and a single count each of obstruction, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, minor in possession of a handgun, discharging a firearm on the property of another, possession of drug-related objects and possession of alcohol under 21 years of age.

His name is not being released because of his age, according to Sandy Springs police.

Police said the boy ran after the burglary at the Modera by Mill Creek apartments Thursday afternoon and shot at Sandy Springs officers during a chase on Roswell Road. No officers were injured, according to authorities.

He was corned by police near a Dunkin’ Donuts at 6060 Roswell Road.

North Metro SWAT attempted to negotiate with the teen for more than an hour, according to the GBI. Police said the suspect was suicidal.

The standoff ended when officers moved in to arrest the boy and he allegedly tried to bolt with his gun, prompting the officers to shoot him multiple times.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

“At this time, the suspect is in stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries,” Sandy Springs police Sgt. Sam Worsham said.

Two other alleged accomplices were taken into police custody when officers responded to the burglary call at the apartment complex around 1:30 p.m. They have not been named.

The GBI is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol in use-of-force cases.
