The DeKalb County School District is inviting members of the community to participate in a roundtable discussion about school safety on Thursday night.

The meeting will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Stone Mountain High School. School board Chair Diijon DaCosta will host the meeting. Interim Police Chief Larry Wright, Director of Student Relations Darnell Logan and Chief of Wrap Around Services Kishia Towns will also be present.

The discussion comes after two schools in the metro Atlanta area dealt with gun violence on school campuses in February.

Four students were shot at Benjamin E. Mays High in Atlanta as school was being dismissed on Feb. 14 after a fight broke out in the parking lot. The injuries were not life-threatening. A 14-year-old turned himself in this week and was arrested in conjunction with that shooting.

Two people were shot in the parking lot of McEachern High School in Cobb County on Feb. 1 during the school day. The injuries were not life-threatening. Three people were arrested in relation to that shooting, including two teenagers.

School districts in the metro Atlanta area have implemented a number of school safety initiatives in recent years, including crisis alert badges for all staff, weapons detection systems and increased mentoring opportunities for students.
