The weather may have been a bit dreary to wrap up 2022, but the new year will start off bright.

Metro Atlanta experienced drizzles and pop-up storms for much of Saturday, with weather set to clear up during the evening hours to the delight of New Year’s revelers and college football fans. Downtown was set to be abuzz with the first Peach Drop in four years at Underground Atlanta and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Sunday will continue those good times with equally good weather, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon.

“It’s looking really nice for Sunday,” she said. “We’ll see some sunshine returning as we get into early next week.”

The overnight low dips to 49 degrees, but Sunday will quickly warm under a clear sky to a high of 67 in Atlanta. It’s a stark change from the past week’s frigid arctic blast, which froze water pipes across Georgia and threw air travel into days of chaos.

Downtown should be congested late Saturday night due to the New Year’s festivities. State authorities put out several reminders to be safe while driving, especially those toasting to 2023 with drinks and late-night events.

The first day of the new year should have mild traffic in comparison, and Monday shouldn’t be much worse, since many Georgians will get the day off for New Year’s.

If you’re a MARTA rider, keep in mind that Monday’s trains will operate on a Saturday schedule for the observed holiday.

It won’t take too long for rain to reenter metro Atlanta’s forecast. On Tuesday and Wednesday, storms are expected to roll into the area, and about 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected, according to Channel 2′s latest forecast.
