A cold front arriving in North Georgia on Monday will bring showers and storms to metro Atlanta and a chance of severe weather to the mountains, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The front is producing a line of storms that is drenching parts of Tennessee on Monday morning. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan expects that line will reach North Georgia this afternoon, breaking apart some as it moves southeast across the region.
The chance of rain Monday is limited at 30%.
“It’s still kind of a warm October afternoon with temperatures up in the mid- to upper 70s,” Monahan said. “That’s going to come with the risk of a little bit of rain headed home from school later today. Some isolated storms in the forecast.”
Monahan said North Georgia is sandwiched between two weather systems, the cold front in Tennessee and another system along the Georgia Coast that is keeping rain and clouds to the south. In the middle, North Georgia is dry and warm to start the day with temperatures in low 60s.
“What will get to us later today is this line of downpours and storms, basically from Kentucky to Tennessee, back toward Memphis,” he said. “By mid- to late afternoon, this cold front is moving into northwest Georgia. Out ahead of it, we’ll have that risk of isolated severe storms in the mountains.”
Monahan expects a moderate risk of heavy rain and low risks of damaging wind and tornadoes in the mountain counties.
“It’s something we’re going to keep a close eye on,” he said.
There is no risk of severe weather in metro Atlanta, where isolated showers are expected to begin by midday. Monahan said more showers and storms will develop in time for the evening drive before the cold front clears, and the region dries out overnight.
On Tuesday, North Georgia will turn sunny and cool, he said. After a start in the low 50s, temperatures are expected to reach 67 degrees in Atlanta. The next chance of rain arrives Thursday and sticks around Friday, just in time for the Braves’ return home for Game 3 of the World Series at Truist Park.

There are no delays on metro Atlanta interstates at the start of the Monday morning drive, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Even the Perimeter is moving at speed-limit conditions.
“Overall, things are looking fantastic around town,” traffic reporter Heather Catlin said at 6:30 a.m.
Catlin said traffic will pick up around Truist Park at noon, where baseball fans will give the Braves a sendoff worthy of the World Series. Fans are invited to bring their signs, don their favorite gear and line up outside the third base gate on Battery Avenue to cheer the team on as they head out for Houston.
