After a string of springlike days in metro Atlanta, Saturday started off a little cooler and a little wetter.

Even though many Atlantans will continue practicing social distancing in an effort to quell the coronavirus pandemic, construction crews will be out in full force over the weekend, likely enjoying the slightly cooler weather.

That’s thanks to a cold front moving through North Georgia this morning, said Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns.

“We have this warm air that is just bellowing up from the Gulf of Mexico,” he said. “It was 82 in Atlanta (on Friday) ... this cold front is going to bring everything to an abrupt halt.”

The rain is already moving out, however, so many who slept in this morning may not see any wet weather. Instead, they’ll be welcomed by a great day outdoors.

“The storms will move on through ... and we’ll be in store for a great Saturday afternoon,” Burns said.

The morning low is 59 degrees, which is 14 degrees above average, he said. But temperatures will only reach the lower 70s this afternoon, which is closer to seasonal norms.

“It’s starting to clear around Atlanta ... so that’s good news for those of you who planned on going out for that early morning walk or jog,” Channel 2  meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

With many staying indoors, traffic on roads is expected to be much lighter than usual, but there will be plenty of construction hot spots to avoid, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Road work on the west side of I-285 will restrict lanes between Old National Highway and Camp Creek Parkway at times, the Traffic Center reported. There will also be construction between Cascade Road and South Cobb Drive at several locations.

Multiple left lanes of I-75 South are expected to be blocked near Barrett Parkway in Cobb County, and as part of the I-285/Ga. 400 interchange project, exit ramps and travel lanes will also be periodically blocked in Sandy Springs.

The I-75 express lanes will also be closed until 11:30 a.m. Saturday before reopening in the southbound direction, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

More rain will enter Georgia on Sunday, with the chance of precipitation jumping up to 80%. That rain will stick with North Georgia into the work week.

Temperatures will also drop into the low 60s on Sunday before rebounding into the upper 60s and low 70s on Monday and Tuesday.
