It may be hard to believe given the current conditions, but temperatures in metro Atlanta could make a 40-degree leap in the next 48 hours.

Numbers could go from the 40s Friday morning to the upper 80s Sunday, according to Channel 2 Action News. Even with summertime heat just a few days away, the city is experiencing sweater weather to end the work week.

“You need a coat. It is cold to start the day at 49 degrees in Atlanta,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “But there is no rain to track, and we're going to stay nice and dry through the weekend.”

Monahan said the air dried out while North Georgia was sleeping, and there will be nothing but sun in the sky. Thursday saw clouds and a few isolated showers, but there will be none of that Friday, he said.

“I don’t expect even any high clouds in the forecast for your Friday afternoon,” he said.

The temperatures this morning may necessitate a shorter walk outside, but Monahan said the afternoon will be nice for long walks and outdoor activities with highs in the 70s. Atlanta is expected to top out at 72 degrees, according to Channel 2.

“It’s the first day of May, and it will feel like it should this time of year,” Monahan said.

Overnight, things will turn chilly again with temperatures in the 40s and 50s first thing Saturday morning, Monahan said. Metro Atlanta will warm up even further Saturday, however, with projected afternoon highs in the 80s.

“There will be some high clouds when the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds are overhead around 1:30 in the afternoon tomorrow,” he said. “That’s it. You're going to have a lot of sun. It’s going to be a beautiful afternoon for that.”

The U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force precision flight teams will fly over downtown Atlanta in honor of those working on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

By Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach 86 degrees in Atlanta for the warmest weather so far this year, according to Channel 2. Rain returns to the forecast next week with the chance for a few isolated storms Monday and Tuesday.

Those hitting the roads Friday morning could see more fellow motorists now that Georgia is no longer under a shelter-in-place order. For the most part, traffic conditions should remain light Friday, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“We are expecting to see that slow increase in volume, but I don’t think we will have any major interstate backups this morning,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.

There are no major delays on any metro Atlanta interstates at 6 a.m., according to the Traffic Center.
