Today is quite possibly the final day of an $84 one-way airfare offer to either Denver or Phoenix ($98.40 inclusive of all fees).

Rules vary slightly by destination.

This affordable rate to Denver is valid on trips started on or after Sept. 6. Travel is permitted seven days a week, based on sale seat availability. Book your ticket on your choice of AirTran, Delta or United -- all offer frequent daily nonstop flight service.

The same $84 rate is valid to Phoenix on trips taken sooner.  Give a 10-day or more advance purchase notice when buying tickets. The remainder of the rules are as above. However, you have a choice of four nonstop carriers -- AirTran, Delta, United and USAirways.

Sale airfares are always subject to change. Every seat on every flight is not offered at the lowest rate. Since only a limited supply of seats is available, act quickly to make your purchase. I recommend starting the search for available seats at Kayak.com vs. calling an airline directly. You can also search for the sale at travel Web sites such as Expedia or Travelocity, etc. Airlines can discontinue or pull a sale price without notice when the offer does not have a "ticket-by" date or when the offer is deemed "sold out."

If the thought of a summer trip to Phoenix makes you break out in a sweat, consider high-tailing it out of town and to the communities south of Flagstaff.

Flagstaff sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks at elevations of 7,000 to over 12,000 feet. The "high country" has an abundance of wildlife in Coconino National Forest and lakes and streams to chill out. When visiting the forest, stop at the Lava River Cave located about 13 miles north of Flagstaff. The underground temperature stays at a chilly 35 degrees. Park rangers call it "nature's ice box."

Flagstaff is 140 miles from Phoenix, or about a two-hour drive -- and, it is situated between the Grand Canyon and magnificent Sedona.
