While plenty of newly married couples still choose to go out of the country for their honeymoons, there are myriad romantic destinations right in Southerners' backyards. Known for its mountains, its farmland and its beaches, the Southeast can make for a great escape.

1. Monmouth Plantation

Built in 1818 and purchased in 1826 by a hero of the Mexican War, Monmouth Plantation, in Natchez, Miss., is a Southern gem. Known for its emphasis on luxury and romance, Monmouth's Spanish moss, rolling lawns, and rooms ornately appointed in the antebellum style, make for a perfect remote honeymoon destination. A three-hour drive from New Orleans, Monmouth is ideal for couples who want to spend part of their honeymoon touring the city.

Romance factor: Dining on Monmouth's brick courtyard, surrounded by twinkling lights, is what honeymoons are made of.

36 Melrose Ave., Natchez, Miss., 39120; 800-828 4531; www.monmouthplantation. com.

Cost: From $195 per night ($125 in summer months)

2. The Greenbrier

The Greenbrier, located in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va, is a classic honeymoon destination. The historic resort, whose original purpose was to house travelers who came to soak in the area's healing waters, opened in 1778. By the Civil War, it had become the most fashionable resort in the South, an institution known for its decadence, décor, breezy summer porches and high fashion.

Today, The Greenbrier — located on 6,500 bucolic acres —has received accolades for its service and luxurious spa offerings. It is a honeymoon destination not only because of its posh accommodations, but the wealth of activities, including an award-winning golf course, horseback riding, carriage tours and croquet.

Romance factor: This place is steeped in history. Take a romantic soak in the resort's hot springs or enjoy an intimate picnic for two at the gazebo.

3. Cumberland Island

For a honeymoon that capitalizes on the South's wild coast, visit Cumberland Island. Everything about this place — from its ancient oaks to the sound of calling birds in the morning and the sight of wild horses at sunset — says romance. Breezy bike rides offer easygoing entertainment and historic mansions lend an air of mystery. Take a guided tour of the island to see its wildlife up close and learn about its benefactors — the Carnegie family has had significant influence, and there are wild tales to be told about them. The only two accommodation options on Cumberland are the highly acclaimed Greyfield Inn or various camp sites. We suggest the former.

Romance factor: The path from the Greyfield Inn to its nearest strand of beach is lined with gorgeous live oaks, and, if you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the wild horses at play on the beach.

Cost: From $395 per night, meals included

4. Destin area

The Gulf has long been known as the American version of the Caribbean, and Destin's crystal-clear water and beautifully planned communities make for a honeymoon paradise. Its versatility in terms of budget and activities are nearly endless: from strolling on white sandy beaches or playing a round of golf to deep-sea fishing or snorkeling. Foodies can opt to grab a beer and a sandwich at a crab shack, or hit a local restaurant for fresh-caught seafood and wine.

Romance factor: Each of Destin's planned communities has hidden nooks in which couples can feel as though they have the place to themselves.

Featuring rolling hills, bike and walking trails, and streams teeming with freshwater trout, Blackberry is known for its Southern hospitality and fine dining.

Romance factor: There are few more delicious experiences than sitting in Blackberry Farm's white rocking chairs at sunset while drinking their signature Blackberry Kier. And for the ultimate in romance, order Blackberry Farm's rose-petal turndown service: Upon returning from dinner, you'll be wowed by a room filled with tiny tea lights and adorned with rose petals, plus a sweet treat of chocolate covered strawberries.
