Georgia Southern has suspended football practice due to a rise in COVID-19 infections among the team, it was first reported by WJCL in Savannah.

In a statement, the athletics department said “the team underwent its weekly COVID-19 testing on Wednesday and a re-evaluation of practice will be made when the results return on Friday.

“We look forward to a resumption of football activities in the near future as we continue to prepare for our Sept. 12 opener.”

The team said it has followed the proper measures to limit spread, including quarantining members.

The state of Georgia has had more than 260,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

The university in Statesboro had 71 positive cases during a seven-day stretch that ended Sunday, according to its website. Sixty-two of those cases were students. Most of the cases were self-reported.

Just this week the team announced plans to host a limited number of fans during home games this fall. The team was selected to finish ahead of Georgia State in the Sun Belt Conference.
