This is another in a series in which AJC reporter Doug Roberson will begin to look at Atlanta United’s possible player signings ahead of their 2017 inaugural season in MLS. Some potential signings, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, may be considered fanciful, and rightfully so. Some may be so practical as to be obvious.

You can follow Roberson for news about Atlanta United on twitter @DougRobersonAJC, and bookmark the paper's Atlanta United page.

Here is the series so far:

Lazio’s Miroslav Klose

Martin Demichelis, defender

Manchester City

The Argentinian was one of the better central defenders in Europe for several years with Bayern Munich, Malaga and Manchester City.

However, he has had a torrid time the past two seasons at Manchester City, showing a lack of pace and poor positioning, particularly the past season.

He was recently released by the club.

Pros: Was still counted on with the myriad injuries suffered by Vincent Kompany, helping the Blues to berths in the Champions League.

His experience could benefit the younger players on the squad, assuming that Demichelis would be that type of player and leader.

Cons: In addition to diminishing pace, was suspended for allegedly breaking FA gambling rules last year.

Overall: Definitely not a DP signing because of his age and the position he plays. Probably not even worthy of signing with TAM funds at this point in his career. Could be an asset, but only at the right price.
