Tringale rolls through Masters’ back nine

Cameron Tringale blitzed the back nine of Augusta National on Saturday with four birdies in a five-hole stretch from Nos. 12-16 to shoot a 3-under 69 in the third round of the Masters. Tringale, a former All-American at Georgia Tech, is 1 under in his debut at the tournament.
“I knew I would have opportunities,” he said. “I watched the coverage yesterday and guys were just annihilating the back nine. I really just stuck to my game plan.”
After bogeying each of the par 3s during Friday’s second round, Tringale birdied both on the back nine Saturday, including a 44-foot putt on the 16th. He said officials put his group on the clock for slow play but weren’t going to time them if they got off the green before the group behind them arrived, so he hurried his routine slightly on the putt and relied on experience of similar putts hit during practice rounds.
“It came off just as I imagined and trickled in on the last roll,” he said.
He also parred the two par 3s on the front nine.
His other birdies included a 4-foot putt on 15, an 8-foot putt on 13, and a 2-foot putt on 12 after sticking his tee shot on the tricky par 3.
Tringale bogeyed the 17th after a poor chip from the back of the green rolled 26-feet past the flag.
He said he will continue to try to stay patient during Sunday’s final round and work on the speed of his putts, which he said was another key on Saturday.
“I’m just a little more comfortable now; we’ll see how the golf course changes,” he said.
