Jason Day

Every round is a physical exam for Day, who withdrew just last week with an aching back. This time it was Day’s caddie, Colin Swatton, who had to pull out after seven holes with a back issue. With a sub on the bag, Day never missed a beat. “I did all the yardages out there and we were just talking, kind of just going about our way. That kind of calmed me down a little bit,” Day said.

Patrick Reed

The former Augusta State player, so hot early in the year, had cooled considerably in the playoffs (see his 82 in the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks ago). He said he has since tried to taper his preparation and conserve his energy. “I got here a little later than normal, just to kind of make sure I had the energy going into the tournament day,” Reed said. It worked.

Cameron Tringale

35-33-68

The former Georgia Tech star returned to a place he knew well as a collegian, but not at all as fifth-year pro. One of nine first-timers in the Tour Championship field, he was 1 over before birdieing three of the closing seven holes. He hit 11 of 14 fairways, first in driving accuracy. “I’ve hit a lot of good drives here that I can recall,” he said, summoning good memories.
