Houston’s J.J. Watt, a three-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro defensive end, is a one of the league’s wrecking forces.

Watt has 60 sacks in four-plus seasons. He can destroy an offense.

The Texans went 9-7 last season without an established quarterback. They are 1-2 and coming off a 19-9 victory over Tampa Bay. Quarterback Ryan Mallett will make his fifth NFL start.

Watt, who will play all of the positions on the line and occasionally tight end, primarily will face Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews.

The two squared off during joint-team practices last season, when Matthews was a rookie.

“He’s a good football player,” Watt said. “I don’t think that’s necessarily just this year. It’s always difficult to make that transition into the league. I think he’s handled it well.”

Watt gave Matthews some good practice looks. He beat up on the rookie, but Matthews still managed to earn his respect.

“He’s very athletic,” Watt said. “He’s a guy who has a great pedigree. He stands on his own. He makes some great blocks. I think that he’s worthy of the praise that he’s been given.”

The Texans are trying to win with Mallett managing games, a sound running attack and a stout defense.

The undefeated Falcons will present Watt and the Texans with a stiff challenge.

“We just need to go out and play a well-balanced game,” Watt said.
