After much uncertainty, the proposed 2016 game between Georgia Tech and Boston College in Dublin will be played.
The 42, an Irish sports website, reported Wednesday that Irish prime minister Enda Kenny will announce a "major international sports tourism event" in Dublin on Thursday that it understood to be the Tech-Boston College game. ESPN reported similarly, indicating the game will be played in Dublin's Aviva Stadium Sept. 3, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. in Ireland). Tech is also expected to put out a news release Thursday at 8 a.m. to announce the game.
An original proposal by the Gaelic Athletic Association to play the game in its Croke Park failed because of the increasing strength of the dollar. Aviva Stadium was the site of a 2012 game between Notre Dame and Navy.
Tech has indicated its interest in playing in the game, which would be the Yellow Jackets’ first off of American soil, but wanted to resolve the issue in the near future to have enough time to arrange the trip. The school already moved a game with Mercer originally scheduled for that date to the following week in order to make room for a game against Boston College, either in Boston or Dublin.
