When Georgia Tech’s freshman football players report to campus Tuesday, Tobias Oliver plans to arrive with them. The only quarterback in this year’s class, Oliver comes from Warner Robins, where he started three seasons for Northside High School, including the school’s state-championship run in 2014.

That season Oliver was a sophomore who stepped in to fill an unexpected gap as the season was about to start.

Ken Sugiura, the AJC’s Georgia Tech beat reporter, traveled to Warner Robins recently to meet Oliver, his mother, Jennifer Arnold, and others close to Oliver.

In his article, found on myAJC.com, Sugiura writes of Oliver's academic and athletic success — and his mother's role in both. Meeting with Oliver's family revealed a grit and determination that has prepared Oliver for the next step in his life. His high school coaches share how they saw that determination play out in athletics and the classroom, where Oliver was an honor student.
