His status remains iffy, but University of Miami quarterback Stephen Morris might have taken a step Wednesday towards playing against No. 12 Florida State on Saturday night.

Morris, who sprained his left ankle last week against North Carolina, threw passes from a standing position to his receivers during Wednesday’s practice but didn’t participate any further.

“It’s not a situation where he can do any drop yet or plant,” coach Al Golden said. “Ryan (Williams) took all of the (first-team) reps, Preston (Dewey) took some as well. We’re moving forward with Ryan and we’ll see in these last 72 hours if Stephen can do something.”

Golden did not put much significance into Morris’ work at Wednesday’s practice.

“He threw stationary — he just stood there and threw,” Golden said.

Morris continues to wear a boot when he’s not on the football field and his ankle remains swollen, Golden said. He did not appear to be walking with any limp on Wednesday.

Defensive shuffle: Either junior Jimmy Gaines or sophomore Gionni Paul will probably start at middle linebacker against Florida State. The position became vacant when Denzel Perryman was switched this week from middle to weak-side linebacker. Gaines and Paul each started once this season at middle linebacker while Perryman was sidelined by an ankle injury.
