A former Wake Forest student told Miami police in May 2009 that current Hawks guard Jeff Teague stood outside a bathroom while teammate Gary Clark sexually assaulted her.
No criminal charges were filed against Teague or Gary Clark, who were teammates on the Wake Forest basketball team. Mike Grace, the attorney who represented Clark and Teague in the case, said Wednesday that a university judicial board also cleared Teague and Clark.
The National Coalition Against Violent Athletes said the woman is to appear on NBC's “Today” show Thursday morning to discuss her allegations. The advocacy group said it has been working with the woman and her family.
In a letter to the university community, Wake Forest president Nathan Hatch said federal privacy laws prohibit the school from discussing details of the case.
“I can assure you the university takes these issues seriously, has a well established Code of Conduct and has procedures for hearing alleged violations of that Code of Conduct,” Hatch wrote. “In addition, Wake Forest offers significant resources to support our students in times of need.”
A Miami prosecutor said in a police report that no criminal charges were filed because there were no corroborating witnesses or physical evidence. Clark denied the allegations and the student waited nearly two months to file the report with Miami authorities. The case was closed on June 29, 2009.
Grace said Teague never entered the room where the alleged assault took place and Miami police never requested to interview Teague. Clark told police the student performed consensual oral sex.
According to the police report, the student was in Miami as a member of the Wake Forest pep band for the team's NCAA tournament game. The report said the student filed a complaint with Wake Forest police a couple of days after returning from the trip at the urging of a friend.
The Hawks selected Teague with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 draft.
