LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Ten days after injuring his left wrist, Braves bench candidate Joey Terdoslavich hopes to be back in the lineup Wednesday against the Phillies.

The corner outfielder/first baseman took batting practice Tuesday for the first time since spraining his left wrist while making a diving tag to complete a sensational unassisted double play March 21 against the Cardinals.

“It’s just weird the way it happened, just kind of a freak thing,” Terdoslavich said. “But a wrist and hand with a hitter is just like a pitcher with a (sore) elbow or shoulder. You don’t want to have it linger all year.”

Terdoslavich was batting .278 (10-for-36) with a team-high seven extra-base hits at the time of his injury. Among his chief competitors for a backup job is Kelly Johnson, who has wielded a hot bat during Terdoslavich’s absence and now appears poised to be named to the opening-day roster.

Johnson put himself in good position by totaling 11 hits and seven walks in his past 28 plate appearances before Tuesday to raise his spring average to .277 with six extra-base hits (two homers), a .404 OBP and .511 slugging percentage in 47 at-bats.
